First Bison Calf of 2022!

We’re a month late to post this — been one hell of a stretch here — but the first calf of the year arrived on April 12th!

The calf arrived right in the middle of of a Montana spring blizzard. And — strangely enough — the previous year our first calf also arrived on April 12th.

Bison calves are born in the spring, and come late March and early April, we go on “calf watch” — eagerly anticipating the arrival of that first orange fluff ball on the ranch.

I’m constantly looking and looking and looking, checking with binoculars, waiting for the sight of that first red dog (as they’re known).

Nothing, nothing, nothing for days — and then all of a sudden, there it is — the first calf of the year, trotting along like it’s been here for years.

It is pure magic.

And we wanted to share some of that magic with you. Photos below.

Welcome to the world, little buddy. And way to go, mama.
