MeatEater Show on Ice Age Tools Filmed at NBB
Last September, after a lot of thoughtful planning over the summer, the MeatEater crew and five scientists from three universities came to the ranch for a field-harvest.
Matt field-harvested a bison, and then a few of the MeatEater guys skinned, field-dressed, and butchered the bison using a variety of Ice Age tools.
The scientists closely monitored and recorded everything — and they will ultimately publish a peer-reviewed scientific paper on their day at the ranch.
It was super interesting — and the guys did incredible, detailed work.
(If you’re not familiar with MeatEater, here’s a recent NYT Magazine profile of MeatEater and its founder, Steve Rinella. We’re big fans of their work around hunting, cooking, and conservation, and having gotten to know several of them personally, we can tell you that they’re great people.)
There were also several MeatEater camera-people on the ranch that day, and they just released a feature-length show on their YouTube channel a couple of weeks ago.
It’s an awesome show — with great shots of the ranch and a short cameo by Matt.
We’ve done some interesting stuff since starting NBB in 2018, and working with MeatEater and the scientists to help advance the scientific understanding of Ice Age tools, Ice Age hunting and butchering, historical bison kill sites, etc. was a great day on the ranch.
Check out the show when you have time.
