Article Published in Scientific Journal
The peer-reviewed scientific journal article on the Ice Age butchery day we did here with the MeatEater crew has officially been published in The Journal of Archaeological Science!
To refresh your recollection, after a lot of thoughtful planning, the MeatEater crew and five scientists from three universities came to the ranch for a field-harvest in September 2022.
I field-harvested a bison, and then Steve Rinella, Ryan Callaghan, Spencer Neuharth, Clay Newcomb, and John Hayes skinned, field-dressed, and butchered the bison using a variety of Ice Age tools.
The scientists closely monitored and recorded everything — with the goal of publishing a peer-reviewed scientific paper on the day.
It was super interesting — and the guys did incredible, detailed work.
All of it was expertly coordinated and captured by the MeatEater crew— a really great group of people.
If you haven’t seen it, MeatEater has a super interesting show on its YouTube channel on the project and their day at the ranch, and Steve just wrote an article on the MeatEater website.
It’s super fascinating stuff — it was just a great day with great people full of great work and great conversations — and it’s so cool to see that day officially turned into a peer-reviewed scientific journal article — adding to the knowledge and science around Ice Age hunting and butchery.
